Updating PHP Version via cPanel MultiPHP Manager/CloudLinux PHP Selector

All of our cPanel servers run on CloudLinux OS with cPanel/WHM, providing users with the ability to manage PHP versions and configurations easily. There are several ways to manage your PHP version—via MultiPHP Manager, PHP Selector, and MultiPHP INI Manager.

1. MultiPHP Manager (cPanel’s Native Tool)

MultiPHP Manager allows you to manage the PHP version of each domain independently, which is especially useful if you host multiple websites with different PHP requirements.

  • Steps:
    1. Log into your cPanel account.
    2. Navigate to MultiPHP Manager under the Software section.
    3. You’ll see a list of your domains and their current PHP versions. From here, you can change the PHP version for each domain.
    4. Select the desired PHP version (e.g., PHP 7.4, PHP 8.0, PHP 8.1) from the drop-down menu.
    5. Click Apply to save your changes.

MultiPHP Manager is ideal for setting the PHP version globally for each domain, but if you need more control over PHP modules and settings, use PHP Selector (for CloudLinux environments).

2. CloudLinux PHP Selector

The PHP Selector provided by CloudLinux allows users to have more detailed control over PHP versions, modules, and settings at the account level. You can easily switch between different PHP versions like 5.6, 7.x, and 8.x and configure custom PHP modules.

  • Steps:
    1. Log into your cPanel account.
    2. Navigate to Select PHP Version under the Software section.
    3. The default PHP version is set to native, which doesn’t allow custom configurations. To enable custom settings, select another PHP version from the drop-down menu.
    4. Click Set as Current to activate the new PHP version.

You can enable/disable specific PHP modules (e.g., mysqli, pdo, soap) by checking or unchecking them. After making your changes, remember to click Save.

3. Adjusting PHP Variables

To customize PHP variables such as memory_limit, max_execution_time, and upload_max_filesize:

  • After selecting a PHP version, click Switch to PHP Options in the top-right corner.
  • Modify the required PHP variables by adjusting their values.
  • Click Save once your changes are made.

4. MultiPHP INI Manager

MultiPHP INI Manager is another helpful tool for users to manage PHP configuration options by editing the php.ini settings for each domain. This allows advanced customization of PHP settings beyond what’s available in PHP Selector.

  • Steps:
    1. Log into your cPanel account.
    2. Go to MultiPHP INI Editor under the Software section.
    3. Choose between Basic Mode (for simple adjustments) or Editor Mode (for manual editing of the php.ini file).
    4. Adjust settings such as display_errors, max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit, and more.
    5. After making changes, click Save.

This tool provides greater flexibility for users who want to fine-tune PHP configurations on a domain-specific basis.

Important Notes:

  • Ensure that your PHP version is set to Inherit in MultiPHP Manager if you plan to use PHP Selector to manage settings, as this allows PHP Selector to take over control at the account level.
  • For security and performance reasons, it’s recommended to use PHP 8.0 or higher, as older versions (like PHP 5.6 and 7.4) have reached their end-of-life support.

If you’re experiencing any issues with the PHP Selector feature, MultiPHP Manager, or MultiPHP INI Manager, or if you’d like assistance setting them up for your site, please contact us by submitting a support ticket at support [at] tetrahostbd.com.
